Key facts

  • DAT tests taken on or after March 1, 2025 are scored on a new scale from 200 to 600.
  • Scores move in 10-point steps: 200, 210, 220 and so on up to 600.
  • The new scale comes with a new scoring approach, which ADEA calls the 3PL model.
  • Scores on the old scale and the new one aren’t on the same scale, so compare like with like.

The Dental Admission Test now reports scores on a three-digit scale. ADEA, which runs the dental application service, explains the change in its FAQ for admissions officers and advisors.

What changed

“Under the new score scale, DAT scores will range from 200 to 600 in 10-point increments (e.g., 200, 210, 220, … 600).”1

The change applies by test date: “The new approach will be used to score test administrations that occur beginning March 1, 2025.” ADEA adds that tests on or after that date “will be scored using the 3PL model and reported on the 3-digit score scale.”1

What it means for you

If you took the DAT before March 1, 2025, your score is on the old scale. If you took it on or after that date, it’s on the new 200 to 600 scale. The two aren’t on the same scale, so don’t compare a new score against an older average or cutoff without checking which scale it uses.

When you look at a school’s published DAT figures, check which scale they’re reported on. If it isn’t clear, ask the admissions office.

Some dental schools also require Casper. See Casper for dental school for which ones.
