How to prepare

An MMI is a series of short, timed stations, each with its own interviewer and scenario. The AAMC describes typical MMIs as 6 to 10 stations of about five minutes each, though timing varies by school.4 Practice reading a prompt, deciding your position quickly, and talking through the issue, the people involved, what you’d do and why.

A traditional interview is a conversation about your background, your motivation for medicine and your experiences. For questions that start with “tell me about a time,” the AAMC recommends the STAR method: the situation, the task, the action you took and the result, with one situation per answer.5

For a virtual interview, the AAMC recommends a computer or tablet over a phone, with the camera at eye level.6
