How to prepare

An MMI is a series of short, timed stations, each with its own interviewer and scenario. The AAMC describes typical MMIs as 6 to 10 stations of about five minutes each, though timing varies by school.6 Practice reading a prompt, deciding your position quickly, and talking through the issue, the people involved, what you’d do and why.

A traditional interview is a conversation about your background, your motivation for medicine and your experiences. For questions that start with “tell me about a time,” the AAMC recommends the STAR method: the situation, the task, the action you took and the result, with one situation per answer.7

Expect to be asked why Virginia Tech (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University). Its mission is a good place to start: “To prepare physician thought leaders through innovations in medical education and cutting-edge discovery to improve the health of our communities and transform health care.”8 Connect it to something specific you’ve done.
