Requirements

Degree

No degree required. At least two full-time years of undergraduate study completed by the time of application at (or course-by-course transferable to) an MD/PhD-granting institution. Full-time year = at least 24 credits completed September-April with grades recorded for at least 18 credits (not P/F). Applicants who never completed two full-time years but have at least 60 credits may petition (deadline July 31, 2026).

Prerequisites

  • Indigenous Foundational Knowledge Requirement (one of: Indigenous Canada MOOC; UCalgary Indigenous Relations Training Program; UCalgary Continuing Education Indigenous Peoples and Reconciliation Certificate; a minimum 3-unit Indigenous studies course; or a degree/diploma/certificate in Indigenous studies), documented in UCAN by October 1, 2026 4 pm

GPA

Minimum 3.2 (4.0 (UCalgary conversion tables, Appendix 1)). Average of annual GPAs of ALL full-time undergraduate years (each >=24 credits Sept-April with >=18 graded credits; each year weighted equally regardless of units). Needs a cumulative minimum of 36 graded credits. Part-time years and spring/summer courses excluded. Applicants who have completed or will complete their undergraduate degree before matriculation have their lowest-GPA year dropped (that year must have >=18 graded units). A completed course-based graduate degree (>=18 graded credits per year) counts as one additional full-time year; otherwise up to 18 graded graduate credits may be substituted into the lowest undergraduate year. Graduate degree must be conferred by June 30, 2027. Optional 10-year exclusion rule (all-or-none; excludes 2015-16 and earlier). Calculated GPA must include at least two full-time years of actual undergraduate study. Failed courses in a full-time year count; repeats do not replace. AP/IB not considered.

How selection works

Files meeting the residency-specific minimums are scored on GPA, CARS, academic file review and five non-academic attributes (standardized to mean 100, SD 15); interview invitations use separate Albertan and non-Albertan cut-offs, and all eligible verified Indigenous applicants are invited; after an in-person MMI the final score is 50% pre-interview score and 50% MMI, with SAMP offers sent first.
