Toronto Metropolitan University’s medical school doesn’t use Casper.1 Instead, it screens applicants with its own recorded assessment on Kira Talent, and that assessment decides who moves on.

What the assessment is

TMU says all applicants are invited to “an online asynchronous assessment hosted by a third-party vendor,” Kira Talent. It “will require the completion of 6 timed questions,” both video and written, to evaluate your understanding of and commitment to the school’s mission and values, along with your communication, reasoning and problem-solving skills.2

“Asynchronous” means there’s no live interviewer. You read or watch each prompt and record or type your answer against a timer.

What happens after

TMU builds a shortlist from the assessment, and shortlisted candidates progress to file review.2 Applicants invited to interview in the General Admissions Stream, Black Admissions Pathway and Equity-Deserving Admissions Pathway take a virtual MMI of six timed stations. Applicants in the Indigenous Admissions Pathway take part in a virtual Talking Circle instead.2

How to prepare

TMU’s questions focus on its mission and values, so start there: read the school’s mission and know why it matters to you, with specific examples from your own experience.

Then practice the format. Answer timed questions out loud to a camera and in writing, with no one prompting you. Aim to state your point in the first sentence, back it with one concrete example, and finish before the timer does. Practicing both video and written answers matters because the assessment uses both.

The completion window is four days. Check your email after November 12 and schedule a quiet, well-lit spot with a reliable connection.
