Canadian medical school admissions changed. Here’s what’s different.

If you’re applying to medical school in Canada with advice from even two years ago, a lot of it is out of date. These are the changes that matter for students starting in 2027.

Two new medical schools

The AFMC now counts “nineteen faculties of medicine in Canada.” Toronto Metropolitan University accepted its first class for 2025–26, and Simon Fraser University welcomed its first cohort in August 2026.¹ Neither requires Casper.¹²

Fewer schools require Casper

Ottawa lists Casper as not required for 2027 entry. The AFMC guide says Casper “will be replaced by a new asynchronous MMI in collaboration with other Ontario schools.”¹ Alberta made the same move a cycle earlier: “Effective the 2025-2026 Admission cycle, the CASPer test is no longer an admission requirement.”³

Four schools now include a step where you record answers on your own, with no live interviewer:

• Ottawa and Queen’s use an early-phase MMI from Acuity Insights: 8 recorded stations in about 1 hour 15 minutes.⁴ Queen’s applicants take Casper as well.¹
• Toronto Metropolitan University invites every applicant to a Kira Talent assessment of six timed questions, some on video and some written, to build its shortlist.⁵
• NOSM University combines a virtual asynchronous MMI with a live virtual panel.¹

More interviews in person

UBC will hold its 2027 MMIs in person on its Vancouver campus.⁶ Calgary, Laval and Montréal also list in-person MMIs,¹ and SFU says in-person attendance at its MMI is mandatory.² Most Ontario schools still interview virtually.¹

Ontario seats for Ontario residents

In its 2024 Fall Statement, Ontario said it was “introducing legislative amendments to reserve 100 per cent of undergraduate medical education seats for Canadian students, with a minimum of 95 per cent of seats for Ontario residents.”⁷ If you live outside Ontario, check each Ontario school’s current residency rules before you apply.

New names for Casper tests
